Immersive activities have become our specialty over the past few years. We love creating magical memories for our kids. This birthday party was exactly that!

Pretend play is where our sweet birthday girl spends most of her days. She dreams up worlds of her own, dressing up for every occasion. That is why we chose this party theme.

Two children in costumes stand barefoot indoors; one dressed as a purple Cheshire Cat, the other as Cinderella, surrounded by large paper flowers and mushroom decorations.

Another essential part of party prep is deciding on your decorations and how you want everything arranged. All of the details for setting up an amazing Alice in Wonderland themed birthday party are below.

A hallway decorated as a whimsical scene with oversized flowers, teapots, and a checkerboard floor, suggesting an Alice in Wonderland theme.

Alice in Wonderland Party Decorations

The set up for this party turned out wonderfully. The decorations outlined below came together and transformed the area into the Wonderland of our dreams!

We planned our Alice in Wonderland party decorations to match some of our favorite parts! With each area came decorations and an activity that make the party full of fun and wonder.

Fall Into Wonderland

The moment the guests entered, they knew they were in for a good time. Our entryway was fully decorated. Complete with a checkered floor!

A room decorated with Super Mario-themed wall art, hanging props, and a checkered floor; people sit in the background.
A hallway decorated with colorful paper props, including large flowers, a yellow and orange checkered floor, and a small door, resembling a whimsical fantasy scene.

Pink and Green Wall

We started by using rolls of pink and green butcher paper to cover one wall. For the green, we painted some square accents.

A person sits on the floor painting green rectangles with white borders on a large surface in a hallway decorated with framed photos.
Three women work together to hold up and install a large green panel in a hallway with family photos on the wall and a front door in the background.

On the pink paper, we painted some scattered bricks. This is what we hung on the top of the wall. Then, added a folded green strip between the pink and green paper to create a ledge. It really made the wall stand out!

Three people hang pink and green paper decorations resembling a brick wall and roof on an interior wall near a door.
A wall decorated with pink and green paper to resemble bricks, with a faux map and red teapot cutouts, and an orange checkered floor.

Checkered Floor

We made our own checkered “floor” by cutting orange and yellow cardstock into equal squares, then arranging them in an alternating pattern. Thin paper strips and a dab of rubber cement at each seam held the papers neatly together. To add a whimsical twist, we trimmed a few squares into triangles and re-paired them into two-tone diamonds, giving the whole surface a spiraling effect.

Large yellow and orange paper squares are taped on a wooden floor, forming a hopscotch grid. Additional craft materials are visible in the background.
A room with orange and yellow checkered floor tiles, green-painted walls, and a wooden door with a metallic animal-shaped knocker.

Floating Items

Hanging in the entryway were Wonderland-type items that we 3D printed. This included teapots and cups, picture frames, candlesticks, and clocks. You could easily find these items at your local thrift store to use. Then, tie them up with fishing line and hang them from the ceiling.

A plastic candle prop hangs from the ceiling in a room decorated with painted cardboard resembling cartoon-style walls and frames.
Pink and red teapots and teacups hang from the ceiling in front of a wall decorated with painted bricks and patterns.

We loved how this area turned out and feel it is important to pay attention to how your items are “floating”. We loved how our teapot was pouring into our floating cups! It was the best touch to this decoration!

Drink Me Station

To finish off this area, we had a “Drink Me” Station, where the kids got to mix their own drink to make them small. And a small door for them to crawl through to enter the party.

Glass bottles and jars labeled "Drink Me" and "Eat Me" with colorful liquids and sprinkles sit on a yellow tablecloth in front of a white door.

Door to Wonderland

For the door, we 3D printed an Alice in Wonderland doorknob. It was the perfect touch! The rest of the entrance was a big cardboard box that we cut doors into.

A person in a blue dress is partially hidden behind a large dog door prop with a Scooby-Doo face, on a yellow and orange checkered floor.

This small door was simple to create. We cut a door in each side and attached a doorknob to one of the sides. This was used for the first activity—entering Wonderland.

Flower Garden

Next, our guests stepped into the flower garden. We made some lovely decorations for this. Flowers and mushrooms were our focal point for this area.

Giant Mushrooms

Giant mushrooms were one addition to these decorations. We made these giant mushrooms with paper mache.

A young child in a blue dress stands next to a large red and yellow mushroom prop in a room decorated with green paper foliage and directional signs on the wall.
Large, artificial red mushrooms with white spots and green paper leaves arranged on a wooden floor, likely as part of an indoor decoration or display.

This is definitely a craft you want to start before party week because it involves a lot of waiting time. Every layer involves dry time before you can move on.

Giant Crepe Flowers

We also created some huge, beautiful flowers out of crepe paper. These were a showstopping decoration at our Alice in Wonderland party!

Large handmade paper flowers and red-and-white spotted paper mushrooms are arranged as whimsical decorations on a wooden floor indoors.
A young child in a blue dress stands barefoot in front of oversized paper flowers and mushrooms, with Wonderland-themed decorations in the background.

These flowers truly made our guests feel like they had entered Wonderland because the flowers were so big!

Mushroom Path

Additionally, we had a mushroom and log path in our flower garden. The mushrooms and logs were made from some cork coasters. They were everything we needed for our activity in the flower garden — musical mushrooms. And they added some fun stepping stones for the kids to wander through the flower garden.

Several red and white spotted artificial mushrooms and a matching round plate are arranged on a grassy surface.

Papier Mache Bread-and-Butterflies

We made Bread-and-Butterflies to hang over the garden display. Each one started with four bread-shaped cardboard pieces, covered in paper-mâché for the wings. The body was a crumpled ball of foil, also paper-mâchéd. After everything dried, we glued the wings to the body, painted the wings to look like buttered toast, painted the body red, and added red pipe-cleaner antennae. Hanging from the ceiling, they fluttered around like tiny toast slices.

A handmade ornament shaped like a slice of bread with yellow spots, red pipe cleaner details, and suspended by a string.

Cheshire Cat Corner

This area was simple. For the Cheshire Cat Corner we used a pink tablecloth. The centerpiece was a large glass vase of cotton candy. Sweet and playful. This area was used for our cat eat activity. It was the perfect simple touch that added a dash of variety to our decor.

Tea Party Birthday

The Mad Hatter's Tea Party is iconic. It is a great stand-alone Alice in Wonderland themed party. We wanted it to be only one part of our Alice in Wonderland party.

We set up the tea party birthday table and it turned out so stunning! Here is what we added to our area to make it such a great addition to the party space.

Lanterns

No Unbirthday Tea Party should be without lanterns. They brought so much character to this space. We used a garland of bright colored paper lanterns as well as a few random ones hanging throughout the space.

A person stands on tiptoe and attaches colorful paper lanterns to a white ceiling.

Tinsel

With the lanterns, we hung some sporadic tinsel strands. The tinsel was an exciting touch. We also hung a dormouse from the center of our lanterns. He is a fun character in the scene, and our birthday girl loves little critters. It was a great addition to the tea party birthday decor.

Colorful paper lanterns hang from the ceiling, with a small rabbit doll holding an umbrella suspended below. Black and white balloons and playing cards decorate the background.

Table Setting

For the tea party table, we had a simple setup. It was bright and fun! It was perfect for our tea party birthday activity. The tea party table was also a great place to enjoy our Alice in Wonderland themed food.

The table started with a bright tablecloth. The birthday girl loves pink, so that is the color we chose. Then we had an Unbirthday cake, resembling the one in the movie.

A round unbirthday cake with pink frosting, decorated with white icing and teal flower-shaped designs, sits on a white cake stand. Three unlit candles are on top.
A three-layer unbirthday cake with pink icing, blue and white decorative frosting, and a slice removed to reveal colorful sprinkles inside.

Teapots

In the center of the table, we had a variety of teapots. This is something we hoped to find at our local thrift stores, but were unsuccessful. The 3D printer came to the rescue, and it was better than we ever imagined! We also added some mismatched candles along the center of the table.

Teacups and Saucers

On the table (and for the tea party activity), we had bright colored saucers and teacups. They were 3D printed in a variety of colors. If you don’t have access to a 3D printer, a variety of tea cups and saucers will be perfect!

Queen’s Garden

The final area of decorations at our Alice in Wonderland themed party is the garden of the Queen of Hearts. This was the perfect spot for our balloon arch!

A decorated room with fake grass, playing cards on the wall, black and white balloon arch, large artificial flowers, and a piñata, resembling an Alice in Wonderland theme.

Balloon Arch

We made a huge arch with black and white balloons and giant printable cards throughout. On the wall behind the arch, we had some cards tossed onto the wall.

Giant Playing Cards

Grass with Checkered Border

The best part of our Queen’s Garden decorations was the grass. We laid out some rolls of fake grass, added some checkered paper as tiles along the outside, and added some curled-over cards as holes for croquet in the garden.

Playing cards are scattered on a wooden floor next to a black and white checkered line and green artificial grass.

This was so easy and cute when it all came together. The bonus was it doubled as an activity!

The decorations for this party were huge. They transported our guests straight into Wonderland! We loved each detail. Also, we loved how each decoration area doubled as an activity! Overall, the Alice in Wonderland themed party decorations were amazing!

Alice in Wonderland Activities

The activities for this party were amazing! The kids had so much fun! We took them on an adventure through Wonderland. The kids were able to experience it all!

Drink Me

We started out with a “Drink Me” station, right as they entered the party! It was a great way to start the party. Each guest got to mix a little drink. They chose their flavor and a mix-in.

Make Your Own Card Guard

This is a craft that can be done anytime during the party. We like to use low key crafts like this to entertain our guests before the party starts. As guests arrive, you can give them each a printable card guard set and let them craft as they wait.

Another option for using this craft is to send it home as a party favor. Our kids love to do crafts, so taking a bit of the party home with them would be so exciting to them!

You can grab the printable here.
