Looking for a fun and engaging Halloween craft project that's perfect for kids? How about making these coffee filter bats? These little creatures are not only easy to create but also a fantastic way to let your child's creativity soar. This is a project that both of my boys really enjoyed. I mean, what’s not to love? You get to color on a strange thing and spray water on it! Below I will show you step-by-step directions on how to make them, but seriously, they are so simple!

Before diving into the crafting process, gather the following materials:

    • Small Coffee Filters
    • Clothes Pins
    • Washable Markers
    • Black Paint
    • Googly Eyes (Optional)
    • Spray Bottle

Once you have the materials gathered, grab your kids and get to work! Begin by painting your clothespins black. This step will transform the clothespins into the bat's body. I did this step before I had my kids come help me with this craft but if your kids are older, they could do this step.

While the paint is drying, you can start the next steps. Now, it's time to unleash your child's artistic talents! Encourage them to color the coffee filters using washable markers. I only presented my boys with the color scheme I wanted. They were offered blues, purples, greens, and black. Q loved practicing his letters on his and X did a surprising amount of scribbles.

To maximize the effect of the ink, fold the coffee filters in half before coloring them. The ink will bleed onto both sides, creating a vibrant and unique pattern. Since the marker ink does bleed through you may want to put something underneath their artwork to protect your workspace.

This is the part my boys liked the most! Using a spray bottle, lightly mist the coffee filters. This will help the colors bleed together creating a beautiful, watercolor-like effect. Make sure you don’t get them too wet or it will take forever to dry.

Once the painted clothespins and the coffee filters have dried, it's time to assemble your bats. Cut the coffee filters to make a scalloped design along the bottom edge. Pinch the coffee filters in the middle, forming the bat's wings, and then clip a black-painted clothespin over them to create the body.

For an extra touch of personality, you can add googly eyes to your bats. We put eyes on half of them because I liked them without eyes but Q insisted on the bats having eyes. I used a hot glue gun to stick the eyes to the clothespin.

With your bats complete, you can now decide how to showcase your craft. We used our bats to make a cute garland, but there are endless possibilities of what to do with these fun bats. You could make a flock flying up your wall, use them as a placeholder on a book, or hang them on your curtains. The kids love seeing their artwork on display.

Creating coffee filter bats is perfect for kids of all ages and with a handful of simple materials and less than an hour, you can transform coffee filters into spooky decorations. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your supplies, and let your child's imagination take flight!
