We recently threw a rodeo birthday party for one of our kids. It was such a blast and the cowboy activities were a huge hit.

Although we planned these activities for our First Rodeo Birthday Party, they can be used for any sort of imaginative play or cowboy-themed day! Not only did our kids love these rodeo birthday party activities initially, but they wanted to do them again and again.

These cowboy activities are great for when you are looking for creative indoor (or outdoor) activities.

Rodeo Birthday Party

This theme turned out so cute! The decor, food, and games all came together to create the perfect Western aesthetic. It was like we turned our house into the Wild West, only with a bit more party!

To find out how we pulled this party off you can check out our First Rodeo Birthday Party blogpost. It has all of the best food ideas, the cutest western decorations, and some other great tips on throwing a party for your cute little cowboy!

A group of children dressed as cowboys and cowgirls gather for a photo, wearing brown hats, red bandanas, and holding stuffed horses. They stand in front of a festive balloon arch in shades of brown and white.

Rodeo Birthday Party

The biggest hit for this party was the cowboy activities. They were quick and so fun! The kids loved dressing up as cowboys. They also loved cheering for each other.

These would be perfect for hosting a rodeo birthday party, but you could even use them for any get-together. Just think about how fun a neighborhood rodeo would be!

Each cowboy activity is easy to put together. They require little prep and only a few props. We even made a “schedule of events” poster that you can print off. This helped our party run smoothly.

So, let's check out these fun cowboy activities from our rodeo birthday party. We will tell you how we executed each one and what other ideas you can use to make these work for you!

Dressing Up Like Cowboys

Before diving into our rodeo activities, we made sure every little future cowboy looked the part! Each kid got their very own cowboy hat and bandana, which instantly made them excited rodeo participants.

A woman helps a child wearing a cowboy hat at a party. Another woman prepares decorations in the background. Balloons in gold and peach tones fill the corner. The room is bright with natural light coming through a window.
A young child dressed in a cowboy hat, red bandana, and boots holds a hobby horse. They are standing in a room with wooden furniture and plush toy horses in the background, smiling and looking to the side.

Cowboy Hats and Bandanas

The real showstopper was the personalized rodeo participant numbers we pinned to their backs – just like real rodeo cowboys! These numbers added such an authentic touch that really got the kids into character.

A person is pinning a race number labeled "NFR ROCKY 2024" onto the back of a child wearing a cowboy hat and bandana, preparing for an event. Others are nearby, engaged in similar activities on a carpeted floor.

Want to recreate this excitement at home? You can grab your own customizable rodeo participant numbers from our Etsy shop!

Seeing all our little cowboys lined up with their official numbers, hats, and bandanas really set the stage for the exciting activities ahead.

Cowboy Activities

We wanted our rodeo party to reflect an actual rodeo. So, we chose activities that you would actually see when attending one. We timed each kid doing each task and had a little cowboy competition.

The kids loved cheering each other on from the chute seats. The best part was, each cowboy felt accomplished after each activity, regardless of their age.

Barrel Racing

This activity is a mirror of a classic event you will catch at any rodeo you go to. We rented some barrels from Facebook Marketplace. We placed them spaced nicely for our cowboys to weave in and out of. The kids loved this! We timed our kids as they raced around the barrels in figure 8 with stick horses.

A child dressed as a cowboy rides a stick horse in a room decorated with brown and gold balloons for "Rocky's First Rodeo." A saddle and toy horse are nearby, and a woman sits in the background. A cowhide rug covers part of the floor.

If you can’t find barrels around you, anything barrel shaped could work. You could use laundry baskets or even chairs with a blanket draped over them.

We really wanted our rodeo birthday party to be as authentic as possible, so we rented our barrels and they were perfect!

This was an event everyone loved to watch and participate in! The kids loved running as fast as they could around the barrels on their horses.

Children dressed as cowboys with hats and red bandanas sit on hay bales and play with hobby horses. A mix of beige, brown, and black balloons decorate the room. One boy points, while others watch him. A wooden barrel is on the left.

We made each kid their own stick horse prior to the party, but you could also find some cute ones on Amazon.

Tie-Down Roping

We used a classic roping rope for this activity. Each cowboy had a turn trying to rope the rocking horse that we had. We timed each person to see how long it took them to successfully lasso their horse.

A child wearing a red bandana and a striped shirt with "NFR ROCKY 2024" plays with a lasso indoors, aiming at a wooden rocking horse. In the background, a person sits on a sofa. Decorative items include gift bags and a stuffed toy.
A young child wearing a cowboy hat and bandana swings a lasso in a western-themed room with a balloon arch. A sign in the background reads "Rocky's First Rodeo," and western decor, including saddle and hay bales, is visible.
A child wearing a red bandana and a toy rodeo badge practices roping indoors. They stand on a cowhide rug in a room decorated with cowboy hats and presents. A toy cowboy hat and boots are on the floor.

This activity would be most successful if you showed the kids how to lasso beforehand. If you don’t know how you could find a video on YouTube that will help the kids understand the concept of roping.

Rawhide Racing

Have you ever seen this event? It is a favorite of ours! We used a blanket and barrels for this event.

You can pair up kids (big kid and little kid) or use an adult to be the pulling cowboy. The bigger person pulls the blanket around the barrel racing course with their partner on it. Whichever team does it the fastest, wins!

This was a great cowboy activity. We loved how much fun the kids had doing too. It also gave our barrel course more purpose as we used it for two cowboy activities.

Steer Wrestling

To keep this safe for our cowboys, we used an inflatable bull. We already had one. You can grab one just like it here.

A young boy wearing a cowboy hat and plaid shirt smiles while riding a black inflatable bull toy. He is raising one hand as if waving, and is dressed in blue jeans and brown boots.

Lil' Bucker Bull

We had the kids ride their horse to the bull, drop their horse, jump over the bull, kneel on it, and throw their hands up. Once their hands were in the air as they were kneeling on the bull, we stopped their time. This cowboy activity was fun to watch the kids try their best to be so fast!

Fun and Creative Birthday Parties

These cowboy activities made our rodeo party a hit! They would make a cowboy themed day so much fun! What a great way to have hands-on fun that is so accessible.

If you are looking for other fun activities, check out some of our other birthday parties. We did some really fun science experiments at our Science Slumber Party. Our Robot Birthday Party was such a hit, that the kids still talk about it.
