What kid doesn’t love dinosaurs? A few of ours could say pachycephalosaurs before their own name. Because of those Dino-loving kids of ours, we have thrown a few different dinosaur themed birthday parties and we are here to share all of our dinosaur birthday party ideas for throwing the best dinosaur birthday party for any age of dinosaur lover!

The first stop on the party planning tour is to invite your friends on your Jurassic adventure! We found some cute invites on Etsy for our party but you could also create one on Canva. Either way, invites show off the theme and give your guests all of the information.

Now, as you plan your party, you are going to want to order supplies well in advance to be sure that everything comes on time.

Dinosaur Birthday Party Decorations

For our dinosaur party decorations, we started with balloons. We love using balloons at birthday parties. They are festive and you can do so much with them! For our dinosaur themed birthday party, we ordered Mylar dinosaur balloons because it is a fun way to add some dinos to your decor without taking up tons of space. You can also put them anywhere! A little tape goes a long way with these!

We also ordered this Happy Birthday balloon banner from Amazon and hung it on a plastic green tablecloth attached to the wall. It made a great backdrop for all of the festivities.

A "Happy Birthday" banner is strung across a green backdrop on a wall. Multicolored balloons, including green, orange, and beige, are arranged on the top left side. A large, gold dinosaur balloon with a smaller brown balloon attached is positioned at the bottom right.

In addition to the Mylar balloons, we love adding balloon arches to our parties. They always add another dimension to the space. Balloon arches also can be added to any theme and are always impressive. Behind our balloon arch, we added a green, shiny backdrop. It was perfect for photos. We also added a number balloon.

A young boy stands in front of a birthday backdrop adorned with colorful balloons and a large foil balloon shaped as the number 2. He is holding a green dinosaur balloon and smiling. The backdrop includes green metallic fringe curtains.

We had a pack of Monstera leaves to add to our Jurassic vibe at the party. The leaves were placed around the house on tables, mixed into the balloon arch, and hung like a garland above doorways. It amplified the dinosaur theme, making it feel like a dinosaur jungle.

As you looked around the party, you could find some dinosaurs or maybe even bones around as decorations.

A table adorned with plastic dinosaur figures on green leaf decorations stretches toward a "Happy Birthday" banner hanging on the wall. Balloons in green and orange are arranged above the banner. The festive setup is in a well-lit room with light-colored walls.

Dinosaur Birthday Party Activities

Dinosaur activities are easy to come by. Thinking up activities that match your child’s age and abilities is key to a great birthday party!

Dinosaur Piñata

A classic party activity with a dinosaur twist. Grab a dinosaur-shaped piñata and fill it with candy. We ordered this cute dinosaur from Amazon.

A toddler swings a bat at a green dinosaur-shaped piñata hanging over a red blanket in a backyard. Three adults and a large black dog watch nearby, while another adult stands by a house in the background.
A young child with long blonde hair and a brown outfit swings a bat at a green dinosaur piñata hung from a balcony. A group of adults and children stand around watching, some on the grass and one adult on the balcony. A red mat is on the ground below the piñata.

Dig for a Dino

We bought some Dig eggs and let the kids have at it! They got to find their own dinosaurs and they were so excited about it! The eggs come with all of the tools you need to dig for your dinosaurs.

A child wearing a blue shirt with dinosaur prints uses a small tool to chip away at a white plaster egg, revealing a small green dinosaur toy inside. The focus is on the child's hands and the partially excavated toy.
A young boy with short brown hair smiles while holding a small toy dinosaur. He wears a blue T-shirt with colorful text and a yellow wristwatch. In the background, a bearded man in a blue shirt and cap sits, and a small table with objects is visible.
A young girl with brown hair in pigtails is smiling at the camera while holding a small, green plastic toy. She is wearing a pink shirt. Another child in a blue shirt with a yellow watch is partially visible in the background, also holding a toy.
A young boy wearing a black shirt with dinosaur prints holds up a small toy dinosaur. He is standing indoors on a wooden floor near a patterned mat and a door with glass windows. An adult's legs and foot are partially visible in the background.

We highly suggest doing this activity outside. It is really messy. One party we did it inside on a table and dust/chunks of egg got everywhere. This activity can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. If you have little kids, they will need help.

Dinosaur Stomp!

Need a wiggle break? This song is perfect for your dinosaur party. It is a great addition to a party for preschool-aged kids. Ask Alexa to play Dinosaur Stomp by Mother Goose Club. You can also find it on Apple Music or Spotify.

Dino Scratch Art

This is a fun activity that our kids love. We bought these dinosaur-shaped scratch art papers. It was such a great activity for all ages! The big kids were able to make artistic dinosaurs while the little kids had a blast making their own designs on their scratch art sheets. It was fun to see everyone’s creativity.

A birthday party with a jungle theme. Children and a few adults are gathered around a table covered with green tablecloth and large leaves, crafting and playing activities. In the background, a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" banner and colorful balloons are displayed.

Dino Egg Hunt

One of the dinosaur themed birthday parties we have thrown throughout the years was near Easter. It opened the perfect opportunity to buy some speckled Easter eggs and put them around the yard. We filled them with candy or small dinosaur toys. Then we let the kids find “dinosaur eggs.”

There are many more activities that could be done at a dinosaur themed birthday party. We would love to hear about other ideas you have done.

A young child with short blond hair stands in a backyard, holding an egg-shaped toy in each hand. The child wears a white T-shirt with a green stegosaurus graphic and the word "Stegosaurus" printed on it. The background shows grass, trees, and distant hills.
A child wearing a colorful floral dress holds a small, white bird figurine nestled inside a blue shell. The bird's eyes are black, and the child gently cradles it with both hands. The background includes green grass.
A pink, speckled Easter egg is partially hidden in vibrant green grass. The close-up shot captures the texture of both the egg and the blades of grass around it.
Children play on a grassy lawn, two of them facing each other and wearing dinosaur hats. In the background, adults and other children are also engaged in various activities, with a small wooden structure visible. Flowers and trees surround the area, creating a lively outdoor scene.

Dinosaur Food, Drinks, and Treats

Another great part of hosting a party is the food. Collecting ideas for the perfect party food is so much fun! On-theme food adds so much to a birthday party. We have some great dinosaur themed food at our parties. You can even get dino paper plates and dinosaur paper cups to really carry your birthday party to the next level!

Taco Bar for a Dinosaur

Serving a meal at your party? Tacos are inexpensive, versatile, and can go with any theme! For one of our dinosaur themed birthday parties, we had a taco bar. We made some cute food labels with different dinosaurs on them such as salsa-raptors, dip-lodicus, tricera-toppers, and ptaco-dactyl sauce. You could also simply do the food labels we used for other things that are labeled “Plant Eating Dinos” and “Meat Eating Dinos.”

Dino Nuggets

A simple meal that the kids are going to love! Grab yourself some Dino nuggets and serve an easy, on-theme meal.

A kitchen island filled with various snacks and fruits. There are bowls of strawberries, blueberries, grapes, and mixed berries, along with trays of pretzels, goldfish crackers, and veggie sticks. Bottles of salad dressing and a container of plastic utensils are also present.

Fruit Tray

A perfect side for a party. Build a tray of fruit that has a variety for guests to choose from. To make this side dinosaur themed you can put a food label near it that says “Plant Eating Dinos” or you can do what we did! We presented our fruit as a work of art—making a picture of a dinosaur!

A rectangular tray filled with a colorful assortment of fruit. Green grapes are on the left, blueberries are on the right, and sliced strawberries form a rough heart shape in the center. A few grapes are intertwined with the strawberries.

Veggie Cups

Another “Plant Eating Dino” side for your party. We made veggie cups instead of a tray and it was a hit! They looked great and were easy for our guests to grab.

Small clear cups are filled with fresh vegetables, including mini bell peppers, broccoli florets, cauliflower, sliced carrots, and celery sticks. The cups are arranged on a countertop, with more vegetables and snacks blurred in the background.

Dino Rice Crispy Treats

A party is never completely without treats. At one of our parties, we made dinosaur-shaped rice crispy treats. We simply used the same recipe as our Pumpkin Patch Puffs, but used green candy melts instead of orange. Then after making the treats, we used these cookie cutters to make them shaped like dinosaurs. Not only were they delicious, but who doesn’t like to eat fun-shaped treats!?

A white plate is filled with light green, irregularly shaped rice cereal treats. The treats appear to be loosely packed, creating a crunchy texture. The background shows a gray countertop.

Dinosaur Bone Cookies

For a different party, we made dinosaur bone cookies with these impression cookie cutters. They were awesome cookies. These cookies took an extra effort, but if you are going in the direction of dinosaur bones at your party, these cookies are totally worth it! We made them using this chocolate sugar cookie recipe. Then we filled the bone impressions with white chocolate.

Cookies shaped like dinosaurs are decorated with green frosting to create a skeletal design, laid out on a white surface with small, green decorative leaves scattered around.

Dinosaur Bones

Speaking of dinosaur bones, white chocolate-covered pretzels are the perfect quick addition to your party treats! They look like bones and they are delicious.

Mud Cups

We made some mud cups (also called dirt cups) with chocolate pudding and crushed Oreos. But instead of using gummy worms, we made some dinosaur bones out of white chocolate using this mold. Then we added some different bones to our mud cups. Making each cup its own paleontology discovery!

A table with a variety of snacks, including colorful vegetable platters, white chocolate-covered pretzels, and fruit trays with strawberries, grapes, and blueberries. In the foreground are cups of chocolate dessert topped with toy dinosaurs and Oreo cookie crumbs.

Dinosaur Birthday Party Cakes

With throwing multiple dinosaur themed birthday parties so far, we have done a couple of different cake ideas.

One way you could do a dinosaur themed cake is to bake a chocolate cake, frost it with chocolate, and sprinkle it with Oreo crumbs. Before you finish sprinkling the top with Oreos, add a white chocolate dinosaur skeleton. We made it from these molds and then constructed the dinosaur on top of the cake. Then sprinkle the rest of the Oreo on top of the cake and around the dinosaur bones.

The simpler option of birthday cake would be to buy or make a simple cake. Frost it in the color scheme of your birthday party. Add some dinosaur figures to the top of the cake and voila! You have a dinosaur themed cake!

A young child stands in front of a birthday cake decorated with dinosaur figures and the words "Happy Birthday" on it. An adult is lighting candles on the cake. The scene is set indoors with a green tablecloth and leafy decorations.

You could also do cupcakes using either of these ideas.
