How to Create DIY Giant Lollipops
Step 1: The Swirls
Start by purchasing pipe insulation or pool noodles in different sizes. We opted for pipe insulation because it comes in multiple sizes. Hot glue the pieces together to form the swirl of your lollipop. Remember to use a low-heat glue gun to avoid melting the foam. Glue then hold it until the swirl sticks together. This is crucial.
We used this method when prepping for our Candyland party and found it worked well with two people working together, one putting on the glue and the other holding it until the glue dried.
Alternative methods for rolling the lollipops include using gorilla glue, zip ties, colored duct tape, painter's tape, or small craft dowels. Experiment with what works best for you. When making lollipops with a youth group, we let them use zip ties and painter's tape. It worked but the finish wasn’t as nice and clean.
Step 2: Strengthening with Mod Podge
To reinforce the structure, cover the swirls with Mod Podge. Then cover the lollipops with newspaper slathered with Mod Podge. Be sure you can still see the grooves from the swirls. This step adds durability to your lollipops. If you prefer, you can also use paper mache instead of Mod Podged newspaper.
Step 3: Painting the Lollipops
After the Mod Podge has dried, it's time to unleash your creativity. Paint the swirls all white and then add stripes in a variety of sizes. I needed to do two layers of white, and I looked at pictures of real lollipops for inspiration for the swirls. This customization allows you to create a diverse set of lollipops that add vibrancy to your lollipops. It also allows you to match any color scheme. A simpler painting idea is to paint them each different solid colors, wrap them in clear cellophane, and get some ribbon to tie a big bow around them!
Step 4: Making Them Stand
When your paint is dry, you will want your lollipops to be freestanding. To make your giant lollipops stand, insert a dowel through them. Prepare a wooden block by drilling holes for the dowels to fit securely. This ensures stability and adds a polished look to your homemade lollipops.
The result? Adorable, eye-catching DIY giant lollipops that will elevate any party. Whether you're hosting a Candyland party or a Willy Wonka event, these DIY lollipops are a sweet addition that everyone will love. I was about ready to turn it into my girls' room decor. I loved it so much! And I'm sure you will too!
