Coffee Filter Turkey Craft
Thanksgiving is a time when families gather around the table to celebrate and enjoy a hearty meal together. While some prefer a simple setup with food as the main attraction, involving children in crafting handmade Thanksgiving table decor can add a special touch of pride and joy to the holiday.
This year, we decided to involve our kids in creating a super easy coffee filter craft that turned out to be a charming addition to our Thanksgiving decor. We loved making this craft for Halloween when we made these bats, so we thought we would try them again with a Thanksgiving twist!
These turkeys were a simple Thanksgiving craft to make with little mess and used only a few supplies. Let’s start crafting!
Step 1: Gather Supplies
- Coffee Filters
- Clothespins
- Brown Paint
- Washable Markers
- Googly Eyes
- Yellow & Red Felt
- Hot Glue
- Elmer's Glue
- Spray Bottle
- Paper Plate
Step 2: Paint Clothespins
Paint your clothespins brown for the turkey’s body. Place aside to dry.
Step 3: Color Coffee Filters
Color the coffee filters using washable markers. To maximize the effect of the ink, fold the coffee filters in half before coloring them. The ink will bleed onto both sides, creating a vibrant and unique pattern. It’s okay if they don’t color every inch of the filter, the colors will bleed in the next step.
Pro Tip:
Since the marker ink does bleed through you will want to put something underneath their artwork to protect your workspace. We used a paper plate!
Step 4: Spray the Turkey Tail
Using a spray bottle, lightly mist the coffee filters. This will help the colors bleed together creating a beautiful, watercolor-like effect. Make sure you don’t get them too wet or it will take a long time to dry.
Step 5: Add the Coffee Filter Tail
Once the painted clothespins and the coffee filters have dried, it's time to assemble your turkeys. Fold your coffee filter tail in half and add a line of glue down the center. Press your clothes pin into the line of glue. Let dry completely.
Step 6: Make Turkey Face
We cut a beak and wattle out of felt. We added the googly eyes, beak, and wattle to the clothespin with hot glue. It makes the cutest little turkey face. Now your turkey is complete!
This simple holiday craft for kids brought genuine joy and pride to our kids as they participated in the holiday preparations. Watching their excitement as they proudly displayed their handmade beautiful turkeys truly captured the essence of Thanksgiving - gratitude, togetherness, and the joy of sharing.
This Thanksgiving, consider involving your little ones in creating personalized decorations like this Thanksgiving craft idea. Set one up by each place setting or make a flock for a centerpiece.
