Step into the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss with our latest book club! This time, we're diving into the classic tale of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Get ready for a journey filled with mischief, laughter, and the true spirit of Christmas.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a timeless tale of redemption and the transformative power of love. Follow the Grinch's attempts to dampen the holiday spirit, only to discover the true meaning of Christmas in the most unexpected way. Dr. Seuss weaves a heartwarming story into a classic poem that resonates with readers of all ages.

Why a kids book club?

Book clubs are an excellent way to engage with stories because they encourage literacy and provide a captivating reading experience.

Our goal is to transform reading into an enjoyable experience for all. To support you on this literary journey, we've created a comprehensive bundle. Within our book club bundle, you'll find a detailed overview, invitations, discussion question suggestions, and customized activities uniquely tailored to each book.

This book club is versatile and ideal for various gatherings. So, whether it's a festive family Christmas party, an interactive classroom session, a fun-filled church group, or simply a dedicated stand-alone book club, these activities are designed to cater to diverse settings.

Kids Book Club Bundle

Start with grabbing our kid book club bundle. It will give you all of the step-by-step instructions that you need to host a book club that captures the core of this book.

Included in the book club bundle are invitations. Print and fill out the attached invitations for your invited readers. This is also a great step to let your children help. Have them fill out the invitations or help you deliver them.

Grinch Clothes And Who Hair

First, set the festive tone by encouraging readers to wear cheerful outfits and playful hairstyles that will add to the party ambiance. We wholeheartedly embraced the whimsical spirit of Whoville by dressing up, even getting creative with the kids' hair – boys included. We also wore Grinch-themed shirts and pajamas. Let the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss guide your attire for added fun and flair.

Start Your Kids Book Club

As How the Grinch Stole Christmas was brief enough for a single sitting, we collectively read it at the beginning of our book club, serving as a great opening activity. This refreshed the story in everyone's minds, setting the perfect tone for the rest of the scheduled games and activities.

While recommending attendees to read it before the club, the dual reading—once at home and again at the party's start—proved invaluable. Ultimately, this approach ensured everyone was well-prepared for the Grinch Quest tasks and kept the story fresh in their minds throughout the book club.

A person dressed in a green "Mean One Grinch" outfit reads a book to four young children seated on the floor. A decorated Christmas tree with red and white ornaments and gifts is in the background, along with a television and scattered balloons.

Grinchy Quest

In the heart of Whoville, a festive quest unfolds. Book club members of all ages can participate in activities inspired by the Grinch's mischievous antics. Join the Whos on a journey through five objectives, each designed to thwart the Grinch's plans and illuminate the true spirit of Christmas.

Our book club bundle includes almost everything you need for the quest. The Grinch quest sheet gives instructions for each activity in Dr. Seuss-like lyrics.

Grinch Charades

Included in the book club bundle is our adorable Grinch charade cards. Each card correlates with phrases from the book. The goal is to see if you can act like the Grinch and see if the rest of the guests can guess what you are acting out. For instance, one of the prompts says "Get a Wonderful, Awful Idea." You might act like you are getting an idea that you love, while also acting like it is a naughty idea.  As a result, it is the perfect combination of fun and comprehension!

Can you guess what Della is acting out below? We were laughing as the kids tried their best at acting and we laughed even more at the guesses that were being shouted out.

Reindeer Race

The next objective was a crowd favorite. Teams make their own reindeer, just like the Grinch did with Max.. Using nylons and balloons, the race is frantic and fun, like a minute-to-win-it game!

The objective is to get 4 balloons into each leg of the nylons and the nylons onto one person's head. This first team to make a completed reindeer wins!

We had small children participating, so we blew our balloons up beforehand. For a greater challenge, teams can blow up their own balloons.

Crumbs to Share

"The one speck of food that he left in the house was a crumb that was even too small for a mouse." Create a mouse hole for this activity, grab some straws and a box of Rice Krispies, and let the games begin!

First, we spread Rice Krispies on one side of the table. Then, using the straws, we raced to blow our 'crumbs' into the mouse hole.

In our book club bundle, we have provided an SVG file to laser cut out your own Grinch-themed mouse hole.

Alternatively, we have provided a printable that you can print on cardstock and simply cut with scissors. Cut the mouse house out along the outside line and along the door opening. That way you can blow your cereal right through the door.

Then, you glue the flap pieces to the back to help your little mouse house stand up. These little details, like the mouse matching the Seussical art style, really makes the party more exciting!

Christmas-themed crafts on a green surface, including hand-drawn paper cards with a mouse and arch, red and green pom-poms, peppermint candies, and red spiral decorations.

Loving Heart

Get ready for a fun art project where every heart is one-of-a-kind! Here's what you'll need: a canvas, paint, paintbrushes, a heart stencil, and a squeegee. The book club bundle provides an SVG file to help cut a heart shape from vinyl. We used washable Tempera paint, but acrylic works just as well.

Steps:

  1. First, we wrote names on the back of each canvas.
  2. We painted our canvas Grinch green.
  3. Once dry, we stuck the vinyl heart stencil on the canvas.
  4. We dabbed different paint colors around the top edge of the heart - we used red, white, and gold paint.
  5. Next, we used a squeegee to pull the paint down over the heart, creating a tie-dye effect.
  6. We carefully removed the vinyl, watching out for any extra paint drips.
  7. Last, we sped up drying with a blow dryer so everyone could take home a dry project.

It was a hit and everyone enjoyed their beautifully unique Grinch Heart!

Whoville Feast

You will certainly want to print out the menu for your Whoville feast. Additionally, we sprayed faux fur green and glued it around our frame, but get creative! There are tons of ways to show it off. Then create a quick and easy feast to complete your party.

For roast beast, we used rotisserie chicken.  Then we dressed it up a bit with a fancy platter and some roasted veggies. We used yellow squash , zucchini, carrots, and bite-sized potatoes.

Also on the menu was Who-hash, Who-pudding, and a special Grinch drink, and let me tell you, both kids and grown-ups loved every bit of it!

The iconic Who-hash was Funeral Potatoes. It was the perfect side to our Roast Beast. We found this recipe for Who-pudding, but to save time we bought mini Kozyshack rice puddings. Of course, we also added “Garlic in Your Soul” rolls, or garlic knots.

Every good-themed party needs a themed drink. We served a Grinch drink that was Lime Jaritos Soda topped with a fluffy, green cotton candy on a straw. Is anyone surprised the kids instantly ate their cotton candy?

Grinch Kid Book Club Drink Dispenser

For dessert, we made cute little grinch treats. We topped an Oreo with a strawberry and dipped it in green chocolate. Then we added a little red sprinkle, but you could also add a heart candy.

This feast was the perfect finishing point for our Grinch book club. We even let a Who carve the roast beast.
