If you are looking for some Harry Potter crafts for a family fun night, we’ve got you covered! A DIY wand is pure magic! We love how each one turns out so different.

Making wands can be a perfect Halloween craft, Harry Potter craft, or even for a witch or wizard-themed party. Our kids had so much fun making their own wands. We also really enjoyed creating these wands ourselves. What a fun, creative activity.

The great part of these DIY wands is that they are completely customizable! Do you want a short wand? Great! Cut your dowel to size. Do you want a replica of a Harry Potter wand? Perfect! Grab a picture of the wand and recreate it. Do you want your kids to create? Grab your supplies, set them out, and help them create the magic wand of their dreams.

We just loved how many wands we could make, and how different each one was!

Instructions for DIY Wand

Step 1: Plan Wand Style

First, you will need to plan out your wand style. Depending on how you plan to make your DIY wand you may not need all of the supplies listed. We used pony beads and pipe cleaners when we let our kids make bright-colored wands, but we didn’t use them for any other wands.

A mystical setting featuring an open ancient book with intricate illustrations, two ornate wands resting on its pages, small potted plants, brown and amber glass bottles, and a quill on a wooden table, evoking a magical, wizarding atmosphere.

Step 2: Embellish and Decorate Wand

Now that you have decided what style of wand you want to make, you are going to gather your supplies. We used some of the same supplies that we used when we made Mandrakes. This made getting some of these supplies even more worth it!

Next, you are going to build out your wand. There are so many optional ways to make your wand uniquely yours. Below are some of the options you may want to consider.

Wand Length: Check the length of your dowel. Do you want your wand shorter? If so, use scissors to cut your dowel to size before you start to decorate it.

Add Embellishments:  To give our wands a unique and magical touch, we experimented with various embellishments. Some wands were wrapped with jute rope, creating a rustic and textured look. For others, we used hot glue to attach aluminum foil around the handle, giving them a metallic, enchanted feel. These materials were all secured with a hot glue gun to ensure they stayed firmly attached.

Five ornately designed, handcrafted wands are laid out on a wooden table next to a few open books. The wands vary in texture and design, ranging from smooth to intricately detailed surfaces, with some appearing to be wrapped in thread or foil.

Foam Clay: You can use foam clay to cover parts or the whole of your wand. Remember, the more you use, the longer it takes to dry. The foam clay can be beneficial in making your wand look as if it is made of wood. You can add designs, variations in width, or even change the shape of your dowel with the foam clay.

A person wearing a green shirt is seated at a table, inspecting a long white object while holding it in their hands. A large white container filled with similar objects is on the table, along with some open books and papers.

Hot Glue:  Adding layers of hot glue is a fun way to give your wand character. Slowly build up the glue in different patterns to create unique textures and designs. You can apply the glue only to the handle for a more subtle effect or extend it all the way to the tip for a bolder look. This process usually requires 2-3 glue sticks, so make sure you have plenty on hand.

After your glue and foam clay has dried, it is time to paint your wand.

Step 3: Paint Wand

We chose to spray-paint our wands first. This helped the wands get full coverage paint in a short amount of time.

A young boy in a striped shirt and denim shorts sprays paint onto cardboard sheets laid out on the grass. He is in a backyard area with plants growing along the house's exterior wall.

After spray painting, let your wand dry completely. Then, you can use coordinating acrylic paint to highlight the areas you want. This gives each DIY wand a unique and artistic touch.

A woman with a long braid and wearing a striped shirt is sitting at a table, using a paintbrush to coat a small wooden object. She is smiling and appears to be engaged in a craft project. The background shows a bright room with large windows.

When your highlights have dried, you can add any finishing touches that you would like.

Now your wand is complete! Our kids absolutely love playing with their wands. But there are some other uses for them as well.

DIY Harry Potter Decorations

You can set up a Harry Potter corner of decor in your house. This is a great place to show off those books we all love. This would be a fun display and we have some of the perfect additions. You can add a jar of your DIY Harry Potter wand and make some that are based on the book (or movie).

A wooden table displays five intricately designed magic wands, a small potted plant, glass bottles filled with herbs, a stack of books, and dried sage wrapped in twine, creating a whimsical and mystical scene.

Another addition is to make some mandrakes. You can check out our blog post here. We give you a full walk-through of how to create some realistic mandrakes that are perfect for your decor!

And finally, spell books! We have been making DIY spell books for years. They are such a fun craft and add so much to Halloween decorations.
