We were looking for a great activity to do on Harry Potter’s birthday. We decided making mandrakes would be perfect! They are such a great addition to your house as some Harry Potter decor and are perfect for Halloween. These were easy enough that our kids were able to help us make their own, while giving the adults a creative challenge.

Making these DIY mandrakes was a great time with our family. To add some extra fun, you could listen to a “Harry Potter” audiobook while you create or even watch the movie.

What Is A Mandrake?

A mandrake is a plant that has been famous in stories and old medicine for a long time. Its root is thick and has limbs that resemble a human. Some people used to think it had magical powers. In the past, people believed mandrakes could make people fall in love, cure sickness, and help with sleep because of the special chemicals in the plant.

There was a legend that if you pulled a mandrake from the ground, it would scream and could hurt or even kill anyone who heard it. Because of this, people used special tricks to pull it out safely. Nowadays, mandrakes are mostly studied for their interesting history and unique look.

In “Harry Potter”, J.K. Rowling blends historical and mythical elements in her depiction of mandrakes. In the books, their most notable feature is their scream, which is fatal when the plant is fully grown and dangerous even when young.

Mandrakes are crucial in potions and remedies. In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,"  Professor Sprout teaches students to handle mandrakes in Herbology class, requiring earmuffs to protect against their lethal cry.

DIY Mandrake Assembly

Step 1: Shape the Mandrake Body

Begin by forming the basic shape of your mandrake using crumpled aluminum foil. Make sure to include arms, legs, and horn-like stumps for the leaves. You can add anywhere from 1 to 3 horns to the head.

Step 2: Add Wiring

Insert short wires (approximately 2-3 inches long) into the horn-like stumps and limbs. Secure them using hot glue. Leave about 2 inches of wire exposed. This will be used to attach the leaves and roots.

Step 3: Apply Foam Clay

Cover the aluminum foil mandrake body with foam clay. Foam clay is recommended for its ease of use and quick drying time. Foam clay also makes it easy for the kids. Create a wrinkled texture throughout the body by pinching small pieces of clay.

Enhance the texture of your mandrake using these techniques:

  • Roll clay snakes and wrap them around the mandrake for a vine-like appearance, smoothing the edges into the clay body.
  • Use a finger, nail file, or clay tool to draw wood grain patterns, varying the direction for a realistic wood-like texture.

A hand is holding a white, gnarled, root-like creature figure. Surrounding the figure are small potted plants, an open book with illustrations, and a brown glass bottle. The background has a book titled "Welcome to Oaken Thicket.

Step 4: Sculpt the Face

Fashion the mandrake's face by forming small clay balls for the eyes and rectangles for the eyelids. Blend them seamlessly into the clay body. We did this by using a small cuticle pushing stick or our fingernails.

Craft a nose using a small triangle shape, smoothing it into the face.

For lips, roll a thin snake of clay, place it on the face, and smooth the edges.

Create eyebrows using tiny clay snakes, adding texture with a fingernail.

A white, intricately detailed sculpture made of clay rests against the rim of a terracotta pot. The sculpture appears unfinished and is surrounded by green, leafy plants in the background. Some crafting tools are visible in the upper right corner.

Step 5: Paint Your Mandrake

Paint the entire mandrake with dark brown and medium brown paint as the base color. Apply light brown and tan paint to highlight the raised areas of the wrinkles.

Step 6: Add Roots

Tie twine to the exposed wires in the arms and legs. Wrap the remaining wire around the twine for more security. Unravel and cut the twine to the desired root length. Some twine may naturally fray, eliminating the need for cutting. Secure the twine with hot glue and cover it with clay to create a joint.

After your clay joints have dried, paint them to match your mandrake. Add some paint to your twine to make the twine transition naturally to a lighter color.

Allow your mandrake to dry entirely before moving on to the next step.

Step 7: Attach Leaves

Secure fake leaves by wrapping the wire from the horns around their stems. To ensure a cohesive look, add more clay around the leaves as before. Allow it to dry and touch it up with paint as needed.

Step 8: Plant Your Mandrake

Now that your mandrake is complete, "plant" it in a pot and sprinkle some soil on top for a realistic finishing touch.

Add another finishing touch to your mandrake and grab our label from our Etsy Store. It glues right on your pot and adds another element of creativity.
