Ready for one of our all-time favorite books that shows how important and magical reading truly is? “Matilda” by Roald Dahl is the perfect book for a book club and can be paired with fun library activities! It was actually our second-ever book club following “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

We had so much fun reading with our kids and throwing them a party, we just had to do it again. This time, we focus a little bit less on the treats.

Although we were excited to share this childhood favorite with our kids, we were just as excited to read it again (or for the first time for some of us). Some of us read aloud, listened to the audiobook, or even used a Tonie or Yoto Player to enjoy this story with our kids.

The best part about book clubs is you can read in whatever way works for your family and still participate in the literary experiences together!

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Matilda is a story of a brilliant young girl who overcomes many challenges while using her intelligence. She teaches herself to read and learns to love the magic of a book that can transport a person into a different world! Matilda discovers that she has a special ability and she tries to use it for good, helping those around her who are mistreated.

This story explores many themes including resilience and justice. It also highlights the power of knowledge and education. Matilda discovers the transformative power of kindness. Ultimately, the story celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the potential for individual strength to bring about positive change.

Why a Kids’ Book Club?

We create kids' book clubs because reading is incredibly important. These book clubs help children engage with stories, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of books.

To support this, we've created a bundle designed to make the reading experience even more enjoyable. Inside, you'll find a simple guide, discussion questions, and fun activities specifically tailored for this book.

You can use this book club for various occasions, such as family parties, school classes, church groups, or regular get-togethers with friends. The activities are adaptable, making reading a fun and valuable experience in any setting.

Kids’ Book Club Bundle

The Matilda Book Club Bundle comes with an outline for the book club including discussion questions that align with the book. There are questions for both early readers and fluent readers.

In addition to the outline, the book club bundle comes with two printout activities. A library scavenger hunt and bingo! Both activities were enjoyed by our kids.

Book Club Activities

Library Activities

Library activities are a great way to get kids engaged with books and encourage a love for reading, especially with our Matilda Book Club theme. Watching kids explore the picture book section or tackle more advanced literature really sparks their curiosity and helps them connect with their surroundings. Two fun activities inspired by our  "Matilda" book club are Library Bingo and the Library Scavenger Hunt. These activities cater to different age groups and reading levels, so there's something for everyone. They can make a trip to the library feel like an adventure, helping children discover new books—especially ones that highlight themes of resilience and imagination—while also learning some useful skills along the way!

Library Bingo

Library Bingo was created with our young ones in mind. It was the cutest icon on each square. It is perfect for using in the picture book section of the library. The kids are looking for pictures in books of specific items. This is a great activity for getting the kids into books. You may just find them collecting books they want to read!

Library Scavenger Hunt

The Library Scavenger Hunt was created for our older, more fluent readers. This activity can be done in two ways.

INDIVIDUAL BOOK HUNT

The first way is by having a printout of the hints per guest. They can take their paper throughout the library and find books that match the hint. Then, they write down the book title and author on the line.

GROUP CHALLENGE: FIND AND SHARE!

The second way you can use this scavenger hunt is to have one printout. Then, send your groups out to find a book that fits the description. They must bring the book back. This way the entire group gets to see all of the possibilities of books they could read in that category.

However you choose to use the Library Scavenger Hunt, make sure your group is respectful, quiet, and doesn’t run around the library. This time in the library would also be a great time to teach your kids the organization system of the library. Then they can learn something new, just like Matilda did!

Chocolate Cake (and Optional Movie)

The last activity our group participated in during our book club was indulging in a chocolate cake. We chose to watch the movie while we ate cake. It was a great chance to talk about the differences between the book and the movie. We also found some things in the movie that brought what we imagined to life.
