Our Book Club

Because the book “Over And Under the Canyon” is a short picture book, this is a book club that can easily be done in any setting!

We did this book club with all of our kids on our family trip to Lake Powell. We could not think of a better place to read and talk about the desert canyon. It was also the perfect activity to break up our hot desert days full of sun and swimming. We read the book, talked about our 5 senses, and went on a short nature walk in the canyon to explore.

Some of the kids gathered things to glue onto their paper. Some gathered sand, plants, and small pebbles. Others chose to draw what they saw, felt, and heard. After filling out our worksheets, we talked about the different elements that we observed.

Whether it is with your kids, the cousins, or the kids in the neighborhood; this book club is a fun adventure to have.

Host Your Own Book Club

Start by planning a time to gather together. Then plan out what activities you would like to do with your group. We have some suggestions for canyon activities that go along with this book. We highly suggest actually going out into nature. Even if you don’t live in the desert or near a canyon, go on a hike or nature walk. Then talk about how the things you saw (heard and felt) were different from what they saw in the story.

Read Over and Under the Canyon

When doing your book club, you are going to start by coming together and reading the book “Over and Under the Canyon.”

Over and Under the Canyon Discussion

After you read the book, you can have a discussion about the desert ecosystem. What are some things that surprise you about the desert?

Our book club bundle has all of the discussion questions you need to help guide this conversation. It also has a worksheet with the senses for your group to fill out about their adventure. We suggest going over the worksheet before you set out on your hike or walk, so your group knows what they are looking for.

Outdoor Adventure

Now, it is time to set out on an adventure! Whether you choose a nature walk or a hike, we are certain this adventure will open your eyes to the ecosystem around you.

A man sits on a rock near a body of water with two children. The older child, a girl with long hair, helps the younger child, a toddler, with their sandals. The children are dressed in light, summer clothing. Red rock formations are visible in the background.
A toddler with short brown hair, wearing green shorts and no shirt, stands on a rocky terrain in an outdoor setting. The child is barefoot and appears to be exploring, facing away from the camera. The background consists of rocks and earthy ground.

Worksheet Activity

After going on your outdoor adventure, it’s time to complete the worksheet. This is where you can glue things that were gathered on your adventure. You can also just draw pictures or write words. However you choose to fill out this page, it will be a fun and educational experience.
