Over and Under the Snow

"Over and Under the Snow" by Kate Messner is a children's picture book that explores the hidden world beneath the snow during winter.

The story follows a child and parent, as they cross-country ski. They discover the activities of animals living in the world of winter; both above and below the snow. As the book highlights how animals adapt and survive in the cold season, it also beautifully captures the interconnectedness of the world. The illustrations are inviting. The narrative provides a glimpse into the winter world, making it an engaging and educational read for all readers.

We did a couple of different winter adventures after reading this book.

Over and Under the Snow Nature Walk

Sami's Nature Walk

"My husband and I took our family on a short winter nature walk along the river. We listened to the sound of the water as we walked. We also listened for the crunch of the snow as we walked. My kids looked so cute as they were bundled up and looked like walking marshmallows. The kids enjoyed eating all of the fresh snow they could get in their mouths. They would make snow angels and then roll over to lick the snow. We built a snowman and slid like penguins down hills. It was a fun time! As we walked down the trail we observed birds and bugs. Who would have thought that we'd encounter bugs during a winter walk?”

-Sami

Over and Under The Snow Backyard Skiing

Kristin's Backyard Skiing

"My husband decided that he and Della would do some skiing in the backyard! Afterward, we made a cave under our pine tree that was weighed down by the snow. We pretended to be the hibernating bear in the book and then searched around the yard for mounds in the snow that could be signs of mice, squirrels, and other little animals we read about in the book. Even though I knew that none of these were likely to be in our backyard, I loved that she was applying the things she learned from the book and was searching for these animals, and letting her imagination and curiosity take the lead as she searched."

-Kristin
