Start of the Kids Book Club

Back in the day, it was just us six sisters hanging out, throwing shindigs for our little ones. We loved a good party and wanted something special for all our cousins to enjoy together. So, we had this lightbulb moment: why not start a kids book club? Picture this: reading awesome stories, having a blast, munching on yummy treats, and bonding big time. It felt like the perfect recipe for unforgettable family moments. With 14 cousins, all different ages, we needed a book that'd hook everyone in. It had to be short-ish, cool for both girls and boys, and promise a fun activity after reading. And after some serious thinking, we found our golden book!

We thought we would bring this Willy Wonka Themed Party idea to you in case you are looking for a fun way to enjoy watching the new Wonka movie together as a family.  It has received positive reviews from critics and we're bouncing with excitement to see it ourselves. (Update: We give this movie FIVE STARS! It is so darling!

Why a Kids’ Book Club?

We started a kids' book club because reading is really important to us. We want it to be important for our kids. The hope is that we can create an opportunity for kids to dive into stories. This boosts their understanding and love for books.

To make this even better, we’ve put together an outline for each book. Whether it’s for a family party, school class, church group, or just hanging out with friends, our activities are flexible and make reading enjoyable and valuable in every setting. You can grab the outline below.

Read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl is a fantastic book for families of all ages. We highly recommend this chapter book as a great choice for reading together as a family, as it offers a ton of imagination and funny moments that was able to capture the attention of everyone in our family. There are so many unforgettable characters, such as the Oompa Loompas with their funny song lyrics and lots of other characters create great opportunities to discuss greed, friendship, and the consequences of your actions.

Scrumdidiluntious Sweets

What's a kids' book club and Willy Wonka themed party without some tasty treats? For us, it was a no-brainer that a chocolate fountain would be the perfect addition to our book club for kids. As the famous quote goes, "A life without sweets is no life at all."

Charcuterie Board

The kids were in chocolate heaven as they let their treats swim in a mini chocolate waterfall and then popped them into their mouths. To complement the chocolate fountain, we created beautiful charcuterie boards filled with a variety of sweets.

Fondue Items

It's important to have bowls or plates to hold the chocolate-dipped treats, as well as toothpicks or wooden skewers to keep little fingers out of the chocolate flow as best you can.

Chocolate Fountain

We used the Wilton Chocolate Pro Chocolate Fountain and Fondue Fountain, which is always a hit at parties. This fountain can hold up to 4 lbs of chocolate, and we recommend using close to that amount to ensure a smooth and flowing texture. Then to get the best results, we melted the chocolate with a little bit of oil to make it nice and creamy. This helped to create a smooth-flowing texture that was perfect for dipping our treats.

Marvelous Movie

After stuffing our cheeks Augustus Gloop style with all the delicious treats from the chocolate fountain, we shifted gears to watch "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (1971), starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. We chose this movie because our kids hadn't seen it yet, but if you prefer, you could watch "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka it is more faithful to the book and follows the storyline a bit better.

As we watched the magical chocolate factory and the Oompa Loompas on screen, the kids were mesmerized and the adults couldn't help but laugh at the subtle humor. It was a fun and enjoyable way to end our book club gathering, and we highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a sweet and entertaining family film.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Alternative

After you've finished watching 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory'  and you're itching for a movie night, check out 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' with Johnny Depp! It's directed by Tim Burton, so it's got this quirky vibe. Depp's Willy Wonka is a bit more eccentric, and the movie adds its own spin to the story. The visuals are different, and the characters are played in their own unique way. Plus, it dives into more of Wonka's history, giving it this cool, darker edge. It's a whole new take on the story that might just be as awesome as the original, so it's worth giving it a watch!

Willy Wonka Wrap Up

After watching "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," it was fun to discuss the differences between the book and the movie that the kids could remember. With its crazy characters, catchy songs, and positive messages, the movie was a hit with everyone. In fact, our kids were playing the soundtrack on Alexa for weeks after the book club party.

We're thrilled to say that our first kid book club was a successful Willy Wonka Themed Party, and we're now hooked on book clubs. Other books we have enjoyed: The Hundred Dresses, The Borrowers, The Worst Witch, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
