DIY Poison Apples

What You'll Need

Artificial Apples

Green Acrylic Paint

Green Wax

Play-Doh

A pyramid of Play-Doh containers is displayed, consisting of ten colorful cans with the Play-Doh logo. Colors from top to bottom include green, purple, pink, blue, yellow, black, orange, white, light green, and yellow.

Glass Measuring Cup

Two Glass Plates

Step 1: Sculpt the Face

Start by using Play-Doh to create the face on your apple. Think skeleton face.

  • For the eyes: Shape like almonds but with more flat tops.
  • For the nose: Shape like an upside-down heart.

The goal is to give the apple a haunting, skull-like facial features.

Step 2: Paint the Poison Apple

It's time to get that poison apple look:

Start with green acrylic paint. From the stem of the apple, paint downwards. Fade the color out through the top third of the apple. The strokes should always follow the natural curve of the apple – no horizontal painting! This creates a nice, smooth gradient effect.

A green and red apple with a few large, colorful crystals growing out of its surface sits on a white plate. In the background, there are two red apples, one with a bite taken out of it, and a blurred black fabric on a dark surface.

Step 3: Melt Your Wax

You’ll need a glass measuring cup to melt your wax.

In the microwave, heat the wax until it's mostly melted. Leave some unmelted chunks floating in it. Stir the wax to melt the final pieces. This keeps the wax thick and helps it dry faster on the apple and only a few layers are needed to cover your poison apple.

We chose not to melt our wax on the stove. Melting wax on the stove can make it frothy, and we want smooth, dripping layers for that creepy poison effect.

Step 4: Pour the Wax

Here comes the fun part! Grab your first glass plate, place the apple on it, and start pouring.

Always pour from the stem. Let the wax drip down naturally. You want the wax to create long, uneven drips – as if you dipped your apple into real poison.

To get wax to drip around the Play-Doh face, you might need to pour a little wax between the eyes so it cascades down around the nose. This will help the face hold its shape when the Play-Doh is removed. Remember, always let the wax flow downward, sideways drips won’t look natural.

A green apple sits on a white plate, partially coated in bright green goo being poured from a glass container. The goo is dripping down the sides of the apple, creating a messy and intriguing effect. In the background, there are other apples and a dark cloth.

Step 5: Reuse Your Wax

Once you’re happy with the first round of wax, move the apple to your second plate to dry. Take any excess wax left on the first plate, scrape it back into the glass dish, and re-melt it (remember: don’t melt it completely!). Stir and repeat your pouring process until you’re satisfied with the amount of wax on your apple.

Step 6: Reveal the Face

When your wax is fully dry, carefully remove the Play-Doh from the apple. Be patient here, and make sure you don’t crack the wax! Gently pull off the Play-Doh, holding the wax against your poison apple with one hand and peeling it off with the other.

Step 7: Smooth the Edges

To finish up, we used a lighter to gently melt the edges around the face. This smooths any rough spots. This step is optional, but we like how this makes the face shapes stand out even more on our poison apple.
