We have the birthday party theme for you! We have a few little artists of our own. One in particular loves it when she can paint. So, we decided to give her the best painting birthday party ever!

We planned an art birthday party where all the decorations, food, and activities were bright This birthday party doubled as a rainbow-themed birthday. Let’s look at the details.

A hand holds a colorful birthday invitation. The invite features vibrant illustrations of art supplies like paintbrushes and crayons. It reads "Let's Party, Paint & Celebrate" with details for Madeline's 5th birthday on March 2nd at Madeline's Art Studio.

Rainbow Art Birthday Party Preparations

Your next step is party prep. We like to add this section so you know exactly what we ordered for our party and you don’t miss anything!

Ordering ahead of party week is important so you don’t have to scramble at the last minute if items don’t arrive. We have had this happen a time or two on party day. Making party day a breeze helps the mood be light and fun all day!

Here are the supplies we bought and used for our Rainbow Art Birthday Party:

Rainbow Art Birthday Party Decorations

Decorations transform the location into the party. There is nothing more exciting than walking into a party and being immersed in the theme. Here are the ways we transformed our space into a rainbow art birthday party celebration.

A dining room is decorated for a party with rainbow-colored streamers hanging from the ceiling. The table is covered with a rainbow-striped cloth, and colorful plates, cups, and napkins are neatly arranged. A sign on the wall reads "TASTE THE RAINBOW.

Rainbow Balloon Arch

This was our biggest, best balloon arch we ever made! A show-stopper for sure. We could have used this as the only decoration and everyone would have been happy! Too bad we made other decorations beforehand.

The key to this balloon arch was the balloon sizer! It helped us make the balloons each the perfect size as you consistently decrease the size of the balloon per color. This also helped the rainbow become an arch! If you are interested in how to assemble this insane rainbow arch, you can check out this blog post here.

A vibrant balloon arch forms a rainbow, spanning from red on one side to purple on the other. Behind the arch, multicolored ribbons hang vertically, adding further festivity to the display. The setup is indoors, against a light-colored wall.

Balloon Paint Pour

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. We love, love, love balloons! If we didn’t have our giant rainbow balloon arch, we would have made more of these.

To make this balloon decoration, we made a basic balloon garland. When the garland was complete, we added a hole to the bottom of the paint can and tied the garland through the hole. This gave the illusion of the balloons coming out of the bucket. This was a simple decoration that made a big statement.

A cascading column of inflated blue balloons is anchored at the base of a staircase. The balloons lead up from the stair railing to a round container at the top, which has a colorful design on the front.
A kitchen is decorated for a party with colorful streamers and a sign reading "Taste the Rainbow." Blue balloons cascade down a staircase, simulating a waterfall effect. A table is set up with assorted snacks, and brightly colored decorations are spread throughout.

Rainbow Flowers

We filled vases with colored water and added some flowers to them. We ended up buying pre-colored flowers (and used baby’s breath) but you could also make your own.

If you are dying your own flowers, we suggest you set this up at least the day before so the flowers have time to color. We have a blog post that walks you through the process of this science experiment. It is simple and you can use any white flower.

A table decorated with an array of transparent vases filled with colorful water and baby's breath flowers, arranged in a rainbow gradient. Paper cups and plates in vibrant colors are neatly set around the table. The background shows a kitchen setup with white cabinets and a window.

Rainbow Aprons

Rainbow aprons are a perfect addition to the party! You can place them by the painting station as decoration until it is time to paint.

Then, you use them for the activity. Finally, you can send them home as a party favor! The kids love having their own aprons too!

A group of children stand in front of a large balloon arch displaying the colors of the rainbow. The children, also dressed in rainbow-colored attire, smile and pose for the photo on a patterned blue carpet. Colorful streamers can be seen in the background.

Paint Brushes and Paint Cans

These centerpieces were simple. We saved 6 tin cans leading up to the birthday party. Then we removed the labels, washed them, and dried them.

After we had all of them, we painted them. We painted the cans to look like paint drips in each color. Then we filled them with some matching tissue paper and colored paintbrushes. We bought these bigger paintbrushes and dipped the ends in the matching paint.

A collection of paintbrushes with blue handles is placed in a blue tin can on a table. There is a green and a blue placemat on the table, and a small transparent glass is also visible in the background. The setting appears to be bright and orderly.
A vibrant, rainbow-themed art station is set up with colorful table covers and coordinated streamers hanging in the background. Tin cans painted in various colors are filled with paintbrushes, and clear plastic cups are spread across the table.
A variety of paintbrushes are placed in a yellow-painted tin can on a table. The table is covered with aprons and cloths in bright colors such as orange and yellow. A multi-colored piece of artwork is blurred in the background. Natural light illuminates the scene.

Window & Wall Decorations

To add more color to the room, we covered the windows with colored cellophane. Each window had a different color, and we hung them in rainbow order.

We also hung colorful streamers from the ceiling, letting them fall down the walls. We used our cutting machine to make large, colorful letters that said: "Taste the Rainbow." These letters hung above our counter, where we set up all the delicious treats for the party.

A kitchen and dining area is decorated for a colorful celebration. A table with black chairs is covered in a rainbow-striped tablecloth and set with bright red, yellow, blue, and green plates and cups. Rainbow streamers hang from the ceiling, and a sign reads, "Taste the Rainbow.

Art Gallery

A wooden table displays colorful children's artwork, including framed and unframed drawings and paintings. Art supplies are scattered around the table. The pieces feature various subjects like rainbows, abstract designs, and figures. The room has a neutral-toned wall.

Rainbow Art Birthday Party Activities

Painting Class

This party had one major activity. We brought in a painting teacher and she led a kid-friendly painting class. She also taught the kids about blending colors, showing them how to mix different colors and create various shades.

The kids followed along to create their own rainbow painting. Watching them create was amazing! This activity got a bit messy. We were happy to have a colorful tablecloth underneath that we could wrap up and throw away afterward.

You could also guide your own painting class or follow one on YouTube.

A group of children sits at a table covered with colorful tablecloths, each with a canvas on an easel in front of them, engaged in a painting activity. An adult, likely a teacher, stands and assists them. In the background, there are large windows and colorful decorations.
A group of children are painting at a table in a well-lit room. They are focused on their canvases, using easels and various colors of paint. An adult stands nearby, showing a child how to paint. Large windows in the background let in natural light.

Punch Piñata

Another activity we did at this party was a punch piñata. We created a rainbow paint palette from foam display board and tissue paper. Then, each guest got to punch a color of their choice for a prize!

This was a simple activity to assemble. It didn’t take long and the kids loved it! We filled the punch piñata with this assortment of squish toys. You could use candy instead as well.

A broom decorated as a paintbrush rests against a wall with a large vertical board. The board contains two columns of circular cutouts in vibrant colors: red, orange, yellow, and green. The scene is bright and playful.
A colorful, art-themed room features rainbow decorations. Streamers hang from the ceiling, colored paper and paint supplies are set on the tables, and a large palette-shaped board with paint colors rests against the wall. A sign reads "Taste the Rainbow.

Rainbow Art Birthday Party Treats

We combined the ideas for an art party and rainbow party to cook up some great treats for this party! First, we bought a party pack of paper products that included plates, cups, utensils, and napkins that kept our theme perfectly. Next, we used colorful plastic tablecloths to protect the table when painting and eating.

Rice Krispie Paintbrushes

We dipped rice krispie treats into colored candy melts. First, we put popsicle sticks into the rice crispy treats. Then, we dipped one into each color and let it drip down so they looked like dipped paintbrushes.

A row of colorful rice krispie treat popsicles dipped in various bright-colored candy melts are displayed on a table. Each treat is placed in a clear glass, with surrounding paint-themed labels and colorful swirled lollipops in the background.

Rainbow Kool-Aid

We bought a packet of Kool-Aid in every color of the rainbow. Then, we served a rainbow of drinks! Place each color in a glass pitcher or in large glass drink containers.

A vibrant party table is adorned with colorful cupcakes, a variety of brightly colored drinks in clear cups, a rainbow fruit platter, and rainbow streamers hanging in the background. A small sign reads "Creative Juices" in front of the orange drink.

Paint Palette Cupcakes

We made some colorful cupcakes. To make these cupcakes rainbow, we used white cake and separated the cake mix into 6 small bowls. We added food coloring to each bowl until we got the desired color. The color scheme of this party was bright—that was our goal!

Next, we made frosting. After we made the frosting, we split it into 6 bowls. Again, we added food coloring until we had our desired colors.

After the cupcakes were cooked and cooled, we frosted them. We wanted to create the paint palette look, so we frosted the cupcakes flat on the top.

These cupcakes were as delicious as they looked. We love how they also added to the decor displayed on a wooden paint palette.

A wooden artist palette holds six cupcakes arranged in a semicircle, each with colorful frosting. The cupcakes are decorated in vibrant rainbow colors: yellow, orange, red, blue, dark blue, and green, reflecting the spectrum of a rainbow.

Rainbow Cake

We made a layered rainbow cake. The cake itself was a 3-layer, 8-inch white cake frosted with white. After the cake was all frosted, we scraped a rainbow onto the cake. Such a simple cake that looked great with the rainbow art birthday party theme.

A white-frosted cake with a rainbow design and five colorful candles on top, set next to a small sign reading "PAINTER". In front of the cake, there are six differently colored cupcakes arranged on a wooden palette-like tray.
Four children gather around a birthday cake with lit candles, with one child in a yellow dress preparing to blow them out. The room is decorated with colorful accents, flowers in vases, and party plates on the table, creating a festive atmosphere.

Rainbow Art Party Favors

Kids love bringing home party favors to remember the fun. It’s a small way to thank your guests for coming.

We sent home these cute watercolor paint palettes. You could also get surprises from the punch piñata or jumbo, colorful rainbow lollipops. We set the lollipops on our treat table and encouraged the kids to take them home to enjoy. (You're welcome, parents!)

A display of colorful treats on a table. Rainbow lollipops and twist pops are in glass jars, next to a small canvas reading "Paint." Cups of rice cereal treats with spoons inserted are also present. A container filled with a dark liquid is to the right.
A display of colorful swirled lollipops in a clear glass vase. In front of the vase, there is a small sign with the words "COLOR WHEELS" on it, partially obscured by the handles of wooden sticks, which appear to be part of a treat in the foreground.

This rainbow art party was so fun to plan and prepare. Watching our little artists create was even more fun! We hope your rainbow art birthday party can be just as fun! We can’t wait to see what you create!
