We found the perfect summer activity! Sand Art pictures are a great craft for a beach trip, but also is just wonderful for some summer fun!

Our kids thought this craft was a blast. We love how each kid can show their own creativity and personality through their art. This craft would also make a wonderful keepsake for a beach trip. Some people keep jars of sand from their beach trips, but you could simply keep a piece of art created by your own child.

Making sand paintings is easy, not too messy (especially at a beach), and so fun! We loved doing these sand paintings with our kids at different beaches last summer.

One part our kids thought was so interesting was how different the sand was at each beach. At some beaches, the sand was fine and soft—making it easy to sprinkle onto their artwork. Others were rocky or muddy. This made it more of a challenge to add to their sand art pictures. Either way, the sand painting turned out so good! Making perfect memories and beautiful artwork.

If you are thinking, “This sounds so fun, but we aren’t going to a beach anytime soon.” That’s okay! There is a solution to that. Making this a versatile summer craft. You can just get some craft sand or do this activity at a park with sand.

How To Make A Sand Art Picture

Sand Art Pictures Materials

There are only 3 items in the supply list for this craft. Which makes it the perfect craft for a beach trip (that takes the needed supplies down to 2). All you need is a piece of construction paper per person participating, a bottle of Elmers Glue, and sand. That's it!

A bottle of Elmer's Glue-All, a black pen, and a piece of orange paper are laid out on rocky, brown soil. The glue bottle is slightly tilted to the left, and the orange paper is placed diagonally under the pen.

Sand Art Picture Steps

Once you have your supplies, you can start to draw with the glue. We recommend doing this at a table or something sturdy. If you don’t have a table, a flat spot in the ground will also work.

An orange card with "LOVE" written in glue, with "L" and "E" in pen underneath. The word "MOM" is written in pen to the right. A pair of orange scissors is placed on the right side of the card. The design appears to be a handmade craft project.

After you draw your picture in your paper with glue, you sprinkle the sand over your picture! You are going to apply it much like you would glitter. Grab a handful of sand and slowly pour it onto the wet glue, don’t worry if you get too much, you will be able to dump the extra off when you are done.

An orange piece of paper lies on a counter, with a spiral design drawn in glue and sprinkled with glitter. A pair of orange scissors is placed above the paper, and a plastic bag filled with glitter is partially open to the right of the paper.
A crafting scene featuring a bottle of Elmer's Glue-All, a pair of orange scissors, an orange piece of paper, and another orange paper with a sun design drawn with glue. The items are placed on a speckled countertop.

Finish covering your sand art picture with sand and then tip your paper up so the extra sand falls off. It is a good idea to tip your paper back over the sand on the ground. If you are doing this with craft sand, tip your paper over an extra paper or a bowl.

Let your glue dry all the way. Now, you have a beautiful sand art painting!

Three orange cards are laid on reddish-brown dirt. One card has "MOM LOVE" written in white sand, another has sand outlines of two hands, and the third depicts a sun with rays and a spiral center created with sand.

Perfect Summer Day Craft

These sand paintings are the perfect summer day craft. They don’t take tons of effort and they are not too messy. We absolutely loved that we could take the few supplies with us on our beach trip and use this craft to break up the day. It was the perfect relaxing craft that took focus for the kids.
