DIRECTIONS
Step 1: Print and Cut Your Spell Book Pages
Begin your magical journey by printing out the pages for your DIY spell book. You can find our magical spell book “Magical Mixology: A Kid’s Potionology” on our Etsy store or create your own. Once printed, carefully cut them out. Don’t worry about perfection; a touch of whimsy is what we’re aiming for!
Step 2: Prepare the Paper Bag Canvas
Next, let’s transform an ordinary paper bag into a canvas for our magical creation. Start by trimming the bag’s edges, removing any handles, and opening it up flat, like an ancient scroll ready to reveal its secrets.
Step 3: Measure and Cut Your Pages
Using your trusty ruler, measure out the dimensions for your pages. We used 6? x 7.5?, but feel free to adjust to your preferences. Be mindful of any logos or printing on the bag, ensuring they don’t appear at the edges of your pages. Cut out the pages using your scissors, embracing the imperfection of slightly uneven lines for that aged and distressed look.
Step 4: Add Mystical Wrinkles
To truly enchant your pages, crumple each cut-out brown bag page. Go wild creating wrinkles and creases that make your DIY spell book look like it’s seen centuries of magic.
Step 5: Optional Distressing
For an added touch of mystique, you can use a stamp pad to distress your pages. Concentrate on the edges, as most of the pages will be covered. If you plan to burn the edges later, skip this step.
Step 6: Give Your Pages a Magical Feel
To achieve a faux suede texture, mix a teaspoon of conditioner into a bowl of 1-2 cups of water. Use a paintbrush to spread this mixture across each brown page, ensuring they are thoroughly damp. Then, set the pages out to dry.
Step 7: Repeat with Printed Pages
Repeat the previous steps with your printed book pages. Crumple the pages and add the conditioner-water mixture. Lay them out to dry as well.
Step 8: Stack and Flatten
Once all the pages are dry, stack them together and place something heavy on top to flatten them. After a few hours of being flattened take note of the smooth and marvelous new texture!
Step 9: Reinforce Edges
Strengthen the edges of your pages for durability. Cut strips of black duct tape and apply them to the edges. We recommend not using black electric tape, like we did, which proved to be challenging to punch holes through later.
Step 10: Attach the Pages
Now, it’s time to assemble your DIY spell book. Attach a book page to a brown paper bag page using rubber cement glue. Apply glue to both surfaces, allowing for flexibility in placement. Ensure the top, bottom, and right edges are aligned, leaving a padded edge on the left side.
Step 11: Arrange Pages in Order
Using the printable page key, assemble your pages in the correct order, both front and back on each brown bag page. Pay attention to orientation to avoid any pages being upside down. However, the rubber cement glue allows for adjustments within the first few minutes of bonding.
Step 12: Create a Distressed Look (Optional)
For an even more distressed appearance, carefully use a lighter to singe the edges of each page. Be cautious and have water nearby to extinguish any unexpected flames. We found that burning multiple pages together is more efficient and gives you more control of the burnt edges.
Step 13: Mark Hole Placements for Binding
Measure and mark hole placements for binding, starting 1/2? from the top edge and 1/2? from the bottom edge of your DIY spell book. Space additional holes 1.25? apart to create a total of five holes evenly spaced along the binding edge.
Pro Tip
To ensure precise alignment, use the first page as a template to mark the hole positions on the remaining pages. You can do this by making a small dot in the existing hole on the first page, which will help you mark the corresponding spot on the next page. If you’ve reinforced your edges with black tape, a white paint marker works great for this purpose and stands out well on the tape.
By following these steps, you’ll achieve perfectly aligned hole placements for binding your DIY paper bag spell book.
Step 14: Punch Holes for Binding
Using your chosen tool—whether it’s a hole punch, a crop-a-dile, or a hand drill—carefully puncture the holes you’ve marked for binding. Make sure to align your tool with the marked positions and apply steady, even pressure. This step will prepare your DIY spell book for the final binding process.
Step 15: Add Binding Rings
Finally, complete your DIY spell book by attaching black book binding rings through the punched holes. Your enchanting creation is now ready to cast spells and weave tales of magic!
Step 16: Get Extra Creative (Optional)
For an added layer of enchantment, consider repurposing an old thrift store book. Transform it into a front and back cover for your DIY spell book, giving it a mysterious, ancient look. Check out our separate tutorial for detailed instructions on this optional step.
