The Magic of Halloween Slime

This kind of play is, without a doubt, my favorite part of parenting. It’s those small steps into the world of imagination that make moments like these so meaningful—and they give kids a sense of wonder I adore watching. As we mixed the slime, she pretended to be my witch apprentice, teaching me how to make her “famous homemade toadstool tonic.”

Since then, she’s also loved pretending she runs an ancient witch’s shop, while I come to her for remedies and tricks. This kids Halloween slime didn’t just give her something fun to play with—it opened the door to hours of imaginative storytelling and seasonal magic. These simple games bring the season to life, but more importantly, they capture the kind of childhood wonder I want to hold onto forever.

Halloween Slime Instructions

This Halloween slime recipe comes together quickly with just a few simple ingredients, and the best part is how easy it is for kids to help every step of the way.

Step 1: Warm the Water

Start with warm water. I pour water into a mixing bowl. Then, I microwave it for a minute to get just the right temperature. The warm water helps everything blend together more smoothly.

Step 2: Add the Glue

Next, pour in the glue and mix well. Once it’s fully combined, the mixture is ready for the starch.

Step 3: Mix in the Starch

This is where the magic truly takes hold. The liquid starch thickens the mixture, giving it that perfect slime consistency. After a few stirs with a spoon, I usually let my kids start kneading it with their hands. They loves the hands-on experience, feeling it gradually thicken under her fingers.

Step 4: Sprinkle in the Glitter

Now it’s time to add the glitter—this is when the slime really starts to feel magical. I like to sprinkle it in slowly while mixing, repeating until it’s as sparkly as I want.

Step 5: Add the Toad Eggs and Flies

Once it’s as sparkly as you like, the final touch is to add sesame seeds for your toad eggs and a few plastic flies. Pop it into an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out. This recipe fills one 8 oz jar perfectly.

Step 6: Play with Toads

To make the magic of this toadstool tonic even more fun, I picked up some toy toads for my kids to play with alongside the slime.

  • The larger tree frogs are perfect—they fit nicely in the same 8-oz jars as the slime and are just the right size for little hands. They are so much fun to press into the slime or pretend to turn into slime and back again.
  • The smaller toads are a blast, too! Each one has a unique design and looks more realistic, which fits perfectly with our ‘Toadstool Tonic’ theme. They can hop around in the slime and even “feast” on the flies.

My kids played with them for hours—they absolutely loved it!
