Hosting a memorable party doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. In the winter, a hot chocolate bar is a simple yet impressive addition that adds a touch of warmth and sweetness to any type of gathering.

Hot chocolate bars may look complicated, but creating one is a breeze. We love putting together something simple and making it look beautiful. It’s the perfect party addition. We will walk you through effortlessly putting together a hot chocolate bar, complete with topping ideas to make your hot chocolate bar look and taste delicious.

Setting Up a Hot Chocolate Bar

Setting up your hot chocolate bar with different toppings is simple. We have many ideas below to add to yours.

First, you are going to want to choose the theme of your party. This may help decide which toppings you are using. If it doesn’t, choose a variety that complements each other but can provide some unique flavors.

Next, decide how you will serve toppings. Mason Jars are a classic touch to any setup. They are always easy to find and match most styles.

Then, make labels for the toppings. On our favorite hot chocolate bar, we made labels out of burlap and added labels with a paint and chalk marker.

Paper labels or tags are also a wonderful option. You can tie your labels on, print them on sticker paper and stick them on, or even stand them next to each item (like a tent). Labeling is important for your guests to be able to properly choose which toppings they would like to add to their hot chocolate.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

We think making homemade hot chocolate is a great addition to a hot chocolate bar. There are many varieties you can make and ways to do it.

Putting the hot chocolate in a crock pot to stay warm, or just in a big pot on the stove isn’t too difficult or time-consuming.

Here is a homemade hot chocolate recipe you can use. This recipe serves 2, so you can make as much or as little as you want!

We love that if we are having a small or large gathering the same recipe can be used.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Milk (any kind, such as whole, almond, oat, etc.)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, warm the milk until it's hot but not boiling, stirring occasionally to prevent scalding.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the cocoa mixture to the warm milk, whisking continuously until fully dissolved and the hot chocolate is smooth.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract if using.
  5. Once everything is combined and heated through, pour the hot chocolate into mugs.
  6. Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings if desired.

Feel free to adjust the sweetness or cocoa intensity to your preference. Enjoy your homemade hot chocolate!

Big Group Adjustments

To make this recipe for a big group, you use some simple math to adjust the recipe. If you don’t feel like math, we can help you out.

To use an entire gallon of milk (16 cups), you need to multiply all measurements by 8. This makes your ingredients list look like this:

  • 1 gallon of Milk
  • 1 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

If you need more than that, doubling this recipe should give you 2 gallons of milk and so on. Any of these ingredients can be adjusted to your preference. We like to use whole milk for creaminess and occasionally make peppermint hot chocolate by halving the vanilla extract and replacing the other half with peppermint extract!

Alternative: Hot Cocoa Powder

If you are short on time, or you feel homemade hot chocolate isn’t the base for you. You can choose to go with a classic set up or hot water and packets (or tins) of hot chocolate for your guests to add in according to their preferences. Picture this: an entire lineup of flavors that take your hot chocolate bar to a whole new level! Think rich dark chocolate, raspberry chocolate, white chocolate, mint chocolate, and caramel cocoa.

A rustic display features jars with labels reading "Sprinkles," "Coconut," and "Cocoa." A white bottle labeled "Cream" stands beside them. Decorative red mushrooms and a chalkboard with mittens and the words "Cold hands, warm heart" are in the background.

You can jazz up your hot chocolate station by setting out an assortment of different flavor packets. We love Land O Lakes—they’ve got these individual packets that not only taste amazing but also look super appealing.

Or you can use some cans loaded with different cocoa flavors. Stephen's Hot Cocoa has a great variety! If you have guests who aren’t big on chocolate (I know, hard to believe!), toss in some apple cider packets. It’s a simple addition that ensures everyone’s in on the fun.

Hot Chocolate BAR Topping Ideas

Making your hot chocolate extra special is the purpose of a hot chocolate bar. We’ve got a bunch of delicious topping ideas that we simply love!

Whipped Cream

No hot chocolate is complete without a dollop of whipped cream. Take the fun up a notch with spray whipped cream. It not only adds a delightful texture but also allows guests to get creative with their topping designs.

Cream or Milk

Ensure your guests have the flexibility to customize the richness and temperature of their hot chocolate by including a pitcher of milk or cream. This addition enhances the overall creaminess of the beverage. You could also add a variety of creamers for your guests to add in.

Chocolate Chips

Add some extra chocolatey goodness with an assortment of chocolate chips. We like to have a variety in our hot chocolate bars. We typically use mini chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and white chocolate chips. But Hershey’s recently came out with some cinnamon chocolate chips that are so good in hot chocolate. Think Christmas in a cup!

Mints

For a minty twist, introduce mint fudge pieces (found near chocolate chips in the store) or Andes Mints to the hot chocolate bar. The cool minty flavor adds something unique to the creamy chocolate drink. And brings out the flavors of winter!

Marshmallows

No hot chocolate experience is complete without marshmallows. We typically use mini marshmallows but you could also use big marshmallows or fun-shaped ones.

Candy Canes: Crushed or Whole

Embrace the holiday spirit by offering crushed candy canes. Not only do they add a peppermint flavor, but they also add a little crunch. You can provide whole candy canes for guests to use as stir sticks.

Caramels

Take the creamy up a notch with caramels or caramel sauce. Add a rich, buttery sweetness that adds to the overall flavor profile of the hot chocolate itself!

Sprinkles

Who doesn’t love sprinkles? Add to your hot chocolate bar by choosing sprinkles that coordinate with your theme of the party. From classic rainbow sprinkles to seasonal shapes, these tiny toppings add a playful and festive touch.

Three jars with Christmas-themed toppings: crushed peppermint, red and green sprinkles, and white chocolate shavings, sit on a rustic wooden tray. A small red mushroom decor and gingerbread-style gift boxes are nearby.

Coconut

Coconut flakes contribute a subtle nuttiness and different texture. You can just use sweetened shredded coconut. Toasting the coconut can also be a nice addition.

Chocolate Sauce

Give your guests the option to drizzle chocolate sauce on their hot chocolate. Some people love to layer on the chocolate.

Cookie Crumbs

Crushed cookie crumbs offer a delightful crunch. We like to use Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies but Oreos could also be a nice addition.

Cinnamon

A dash of cinnamon adds an aromatic essence. It also adds a little spice that adds something extra to the chocolate flavor.
