Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to let creativity shine, especially when making DIY Valentine’s boxes! This vanity Valentine box doubles as play as you build it!

This year, we created the Vanity Valentine Box, inspired by our little makeup lovers. It’s a fun and stylish way for kids to collect their Valentines. Using our printable play makeup set, this box turned out adorable.

Benefits of Making a Valentine Box

Making a Valentine’s box is a fun activity for kids that comes with lots of benefits. In fact, it’s more than just a way to collect cards. Here are some key advantages:

Fine Motor Skills Development

When kids cut, glue, and decorate their Valentine’s boxes, they practice skills that help improve their fine motor skills. These activities help kids practice careful movements. In addition, they strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers, which are important for writing and everyday tasks.

Color Coordination and Design

Designing a Valentine’s box allows kids to explore color coordination and aesthetics. As a result, they learn to choose colors that complement each other and create visually appealing designs. This process encourages an understanding of artistic principles and boosts their confidence in their creative choices.

Problem-Solving Skills

As children work on their boxes, they encounter challenges that require problem-solving. For example, when figuring out how to attach a mirror or deciding how to arrange decorations, kids learn to think critically and find solutions.

Creative Expression

Making a Valentine’s box is a fantastic way for kids to let their creativity shine. In this way, they can bring their unique vision to life. By taking simple materials and turning them into a masterpiece. This creative process helps develop self-expression and allows them to take pride in their work.

Independence and Collaboration

Depending on their age, kids can work on their boxes by themselves, which helps them feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. Alternatively, this activity can be a fun craft to do together as a family. Whether it’s after dinner or on a Saturday afternoon, pulling out craft supplies and working side by side creates memories and strengthens family bonds.

Making a vanity Valentine box is not just a fun project. Kids will not only enjoy the process but also feel proud of their unique creations!

How to Make a Vanity Valentine Box?

Materials You’ll Need

  • SMALL BOX: We bought this box for our vanity Valentines box. With the thought that it could double as a pretend playset after the holiday. However, any sturdy box will work. Choose one that’s big enough to hold plenty of Valentine’s cards but small enough for little hands to carry.

  • PRINTABLE PLAY MAKEUP SET: You can grab our printable play makeup set in our Etsy shop. Print it on heavy cardstock for durability. Assemble each piece and glue it on top of your box!

  • PAINT: Customize your box by painting it. We chose to paint ours pink and added some small details with a lighter pink paint.
  • CARDSTOCK: We added a mirror to our vanity Valentines box with some cardstock shaped as a flower. We simply cut one out but you could use our printable flowers if you would like.
Illustrated images featuring colorful flowers and leaves with a "proof" watermark. Includes flower artworks, text saying "Cookie crumbles" and "Teacher sweet," and coloring pages with outlines of similar floral designs.

Another option is to attach the mirror to the inside of the lid and keep the box open for collecting valentines at school.

  • TIN FOIL: This acted as the “mirror” for our box vanity.
  • RIBBON: We tied a small bow on the front of our box as if it were a drawer handle. We loved the unique addition!
  • EXACTO KNIFE: Use a knife to cut a slot in the top or side of the box. Be sure it is big enough for Valentine’s cards of all sizes.

Personalizing Your Vanity Valentine’s Box

Once you have all your materials, let your kids get creative and personalize their Vanity Valentine’s Box! Here are some fun ideas to help them express their individuality:

  • Favorite Colors: Encourage your kids to paint or decorate their box using their favorite colors. They can mix and match colors to create a unique look that reflects their personality.
  • Drawings and Doodles: Encourage your kids to draw or doodle on the box. They can create fun designs, write their names, or even add little messages to make it more personal.
  • Ribbons and Embellishments: Adding ribbons, glitter, or other embellishments can make the box stand out. Let your kids choose how they want to decorate the edges or the top of the box for an extra pop of color.

By personalizing their Vanity Valentine’s Box, kids can make it truly their own. This not only builds their creativity but also makes the process of collecting valentines even more special!
