Wicked Party Activities

We love to throw immersive parties, and this one was no different. The activities for kids that we created followed the actual storyline of Wicked. (Well, part 1!)

From Elphaba’s first magic to meeting the Wizard of Oz himself, you too can recreate the experience!

We carefully planned activities that were both age-appropriate (for elementary-aged kids) and captured the magic of the show. The wicked party activities we planned turned the party into such an unforgettable experience.

Birthday Party Activities for Kids: Elphaba’s Magic

Just like Elphaba discovering her powers, we kicked off our Wicked birthday party with a DIY magic trick activity. We love how this magic trick turned out. The kids absolutely loved it. They were thrilled!

Our favorite part of this DIY magic trick was how surprised the kids were by it, even though they put the trick together themselves. Some of the kids left the party thinking it was still real magic!

A child in a pink dress sits on the floor next to several pink and green origami creations scattered on the ground.

Each child learned how to fold paper in a special way to perform a simple but mind-blowing magic trick.

DIY Magic Trick Tips

We do have some tips for success, though. If you are throwing a party for children under 6, we highly suggest building these magic tricks beforehand or planning for extra time and helpers. Our kids who attended this party and were in the 5-6 age group struggled a bit with the folding. But they were also some of our most enthusiastic about the magic trick!

Plan about 30 minutes for the full group to complete this activity at your party. Also, allow the kids to perform their magic tricks. This will be one of their favorite Wicked party activities!

Watching the kids amaze each other with their magic was a total delight!

Wicked Party Activities: Letters to the Wizard

Next, on our trip to Oz, we wrote letters to the Wizard of Oz. We created a fun Mad Lib-style worksheet. There are two versions—one from Glinda and one from Elphaba. The kids picked their favorite character’s voice and filled out their answers.

A letter template, a green quill pen, and a green envelope with gold trim are arranged on a black surface.
Two sheets of fill-in-the-blank letter paper addressed to the Wizard of Oz, a sparkly pen, pink envelope, and pink tinsel garland on a soft pink surface.

Letters to Oz were such a fun birthday activity for kids. They turned out silly and simply magical. We loved how we incorporated these letters into meeting the Wizard.

After filling in their creative responses, the kids added their answers to the Mad Lib page. Be sure to read them, they each turned out so fun!

Then, they sealed their letters in envelopes and placed them in the hot air balloon box to send to the Wizard. This activity was silly and gave each child a chance to express their own wish to Oz.

Popular-Inspired Food

After writing out letters to Oz, we took a break for some food. We put together a food spread that was all pink! Popular themed food was magical. Every item was tied to a lyric from the favorite song “Popular.” This made the mealtime just as magical as the rest of the Wicked themed party.

Wicked Birthday Party Activities for Kids: Ozdust Dance

One of our favorite moments of the party was recreating the Ozdust Ballroom dance scene. This was a blast! The kids loved this birthday party activity for kids.

We had an adult learn the Elphaba and Glinda dance ahead of the party. Then they taught the kids step by step. It was simple enough for all ages. We even had some 3-year-olds learning it.

Children wearing witch hats stand in a circle, following instructions from an adult in a decorated room with balloons and shiny streamers.

The Ozdust dance became a highlight of the party for almost everyone. We were truly impressed by how well all of our kids did in learning the dance.

As an extra touch for this Wicked themed party activity, we provided some props. Sparkly, pink tutus or black witch hats. We let the kids choose which one. The witch hats were a massive hit!

At the end of the dance, we fired off a confetti popper. Did it make a huge mess? Yes it did, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The kids lit up, the confetti rained down, and it was the perfect finale to the ballroom fun.

Wicked Scavenger Hunt

We love to create birthday party activities that help our kids use their brains while also having fun. This party was no different. In fact, our kids were thrilled to embark on a journey to the Emerald City.

In our Journey to Oz scavenger hunt, the kids received a special letter from the Wizard (delivered by hot air balloon, of course!) with cryptic, Ozian clues.

A hand holds an invitation card and envelope with Emerald City and Oz-themed designs; a pink and green glittery backdrop is in the background.

Each clue took them through different parts of the house until they finally discovered the Emerald City. This hunt was full of excitement, teamwork, and some clever thinking!

As the kids got closer to meeting the Wizard, the spaces got more and more green! We transformed our hallway into the Emerald City by having the walls be green. It was so perfect! The Journey to Oz ended at Wiz-O-Mania. You can see how we built Wiz-O-Mania in our Wicked birthday party decorations blog post.

Meet the Wizard of Oz

The finale of our Wicked themed party was unforgettable. Behind a curtain was the Wizard! This was most of the kids' favorite part.

A child dressed as a witch stands in front of a green curtain with sparkling lights, admiring Wicked Party Decorations and a large Wizard of Oz face displayed behind the curtain.

We built a Wizard head. You can get the printable from our Etsy shop. Print the head on many pages and assemble it together. We glued our printable Wizard head to foam board, then we stuck it to a broomstick.

The large Wizard's head floated in the green. We had a parent play the Wizard. They moved the head and used a voice-changing megaphone to create a mysterious, booming voice.

The Wizard called some of the children forward by name. Then, the Wizard acknowledged the wish they had made earlier in their mad lib letter.

The responses were hilarious and heartwarming. Each kid absolutely loved their moment in the spotlight. This magical moment sealed the deal: meeting the Wizard was hands down the favorite wicked birthday party activity.
